FOOD AS MEDICINE Garlic for Cancer
Allium vegetables, like garlic and onions, contain bioactive sulfur compounds and are believed to have effects at each stage of cancer plus biological processes that can modify cancer risk. The NIH National Cancer Institute states “Several population studies show an association between increased intake of garlic and reduced risk of certain cancers, including cancers of the stomach, colon, esophagus, pancreas, and breast.” They also address a key question. How can garlic act to prevent cancer? The National Cancer Institute explains that “protective effects from garlic may arise from its antibacterial properties or from its ability to block the formation of cancer-causing substances, halt the activation of cancer-causing substances, enhance DNA repair, reduce cell proliferation, or induce cell death.” A French Study with 345 breast cancer patients found increased garlic, onion and fiber consumption associated with a statistically significant reduction in breast cancer risk. Further studies indicate increased garlic consumption may also reduce the risk factors of pancreatic cancer, one of the most deadly forms of cancer. A San Francisco Bay population-based study found pancreatic cancer risk was 54% lower in people who ate larger amounts of garlic and onions compared with those who ate lower amounts, and that increasing overall intake of vegetables and fruits may also protect against developing pancreatic cancer. Garlic's organosulfur compounds show promise when it comes to treating cancer, including DATS, DADS, ajoene, and S-allyl mercapto cysteine (SAMC), found to induce cell cycle arrest when added to cancer cells during in vitro experiments. Found also to induce apoptosis (programmed cell death) when added to various cancer cell lines grown in culture. Taking a liquid garlic extract like Allimax and Allimed Liquids and S-allyl cysteine (SAC) orally has also been reported to increase cancer cell death in animal models of oral cancer. (10) Garlic research shows real potential as a cancer-fighting agent that should be considered.
